Final Step: Caulking / Gap Filling
Caulking is the "trade secret" that transforms a DIY project into a professional, built-in wardrobe. This final step seals any minor gaps between your scribed boards and the walls, floor, or ceiling, creating a seamless finish.
1. Preparation
- Clean Surfaces: Ensure all surfaces are free of dust and debris before starting.
- The Right Tool: Use a high-quality caulking gun and a gap filler (caulk) that is paintable and flexible.
2. Application
- The Bead: Cut the nozzle of your caulk tube at a slight angle. Apply a consistent, steady bead of caulk into the corner or gap.
- Smooth the Line: Immediately after applying the bead, use a wet finger (or a dedicated caulking tool) to smooth the caulk. This pushes the material into the gap and creates a clean, concave finish.
- Repeat: Continue this process for all joins where the wardrobe meets the walls, ceiling, and floor.
3. Finishing Touches
- Cleanup: Keep a damp cloth handy to wipe away any excess caulk from the face of your melamine boards or walls before it dries.
- Painting: Once the caulk is fully cured, you can paint over it to match your wall colour for a perfectly integrated look.
